Surrendering an Indian passport after naturalising

Surrendering an Indian passport after naturalising
The moment you take US citizenship you stop being an Indian citizen. Keeping, using or renewing the Indian passport after that is an offence, and the surrender certificate is how you close it properly.

India does not allow dual citizenship. The Citizenship Act is explicit and the consulates repeat it in as many words. What follows from that is administrative: the old passport has to be handed in and cancelled, and you get a certificate saying so.

Surrender or renunciation, and why both words appear

They are the same document. Some consulates call it a surrender certificate and others a renunciation certificate, and the application is identical. Do not apply twice because the wording differs between two official pages.

The application goes to VFS Global, filled in online and then delivered or posted with the passport itself.

What it costs, and the three-month trap

When you apply Fee
Within three months of naturalising $25 plus $3 fund contribution
More than three months after $25 surcharge on top, plus $3
Plus, in every case The $19 VFS service charge

If you have lost the old passport

Then there is nothing to surrender, and the document you need is a Renunciation Declaration Certificate instead. You will have to demonstrate Indian origin some other way: an old passport copy, a birth certificate, school records, whatever exists.

Why it matters later

The OCI application asks for it. So does anything that turns on your former Indian nationality. Getting it done while the paperwork is fresh is considerably easier than reconstructing it years later.

What to send
  • The last Indian passport, the physical booklet
  • Proof of the new citizenship
  • The online form, printed
  • Two separate money orders, fee and fund
  • Apply within three months or pay the surcharge

Why an old cancelled passport is worth keeping

The cancelled booklet comes back to you and it is the cleanest proof of Indian origin there is. The OCI application asks for it, and so does anything that turns on where you were born and to whom.

People throw it away because it is cancelled. Then they need the Renunciation Declaration route, which is slower and asks for far more.

Where the certificate is asked for later

The OCI application. Property transactions in India. Bank accounts being converted from resident to NRO status. Any of these can surface years after the naturalisation, and none of them accept an explanation in place of the document.
