Embassy of India, Washington D.C.

Embassy of India, Washington D.C.
The chancery and the consular section are in different buildings. Visas, passports and OCI work is done at 2536 Massachusetts Avenue, not at the 2107 address that appears on most maps.

The embassy's consular district is seven units wide and stops well short of the country: the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Bermuda. Everything north of Maryland belongs to New York and everything south of Virginia to Atlanta.

How to book an appointment at the Indian consulate in Washington

Most of what you want from Embassy of India, Washington D.C. starts somewhere else, at a VFS counter, so check which door you need before you book anything.

Passport, visa, OCI and renunciation files are filled in online and then taken or posted to VFS. The consulate sees them afterwards.

The government fee is what it is, but VFS adds a service charge of $19 on top, and that is not the consulate's money.

The VFS centre that acts for the embassy is at 1025 Vermont Avenue NW, a third address again. Passport, visa, OCI and renunciation files go there, not to either embassy building.

How to cancel an appointment at the Indian consulate in Washington

Cancelling depends on who holds the booking. A VFS slot is cancelled on the VFS portal.

The confirmation email carries the reschedule link. That is the fastest route.

Getting to the Indian consulate in Washington

The consulate and the VFS centre are not the same address. Read the letter again before you set off.

Real reviews of the Indian consulate in Washington

The embassy's public listing averages 2.9 out of 5 across 471 reviews, and the consular wing at 2536 Massachusetts Avenue has a separate listing at 4.6 with 336. The gap is the story: people rate the building they reached, and many reach the wrong one.

Reaching anyone by phone turned out to cost money, because the helpline asks for a card before it will connect you. Emails went unanswered for weeks.

Anju J.

A passport renewal sat for three months with no reply to calls or voicemails, and no way to find out where in the process it was.

Riddhi K.

The consular wing itself was straightforward once I found it. The problem was the address: the listing everyone lands on is the chancery, which does not handle documents.

The number is (202) 939-7000. Consular sections often do not answer during counter hours, so email usually gets a faster reply.

What the Indian consulate in Washington handles

What the office in Washington still does in person is narrower than most people expect.

Attestation and notarial acts, emergency certificates, life certificates for pensions, and the consular side of anything that cannot wait. Passports and OCI cards are not issued over this counter: they are filed through VFS and printed elsewhere.

What you can settle without going

A good part of this never needs the office at all.

  • You can apply for an e-Visa on the official portal, with no appointment and no office visit.
  • You can fill in the passport, OCI and renunciation forms online before anything is posted.
  • You can book the VFS appointment, or post the file to the VFS centre instead.
This is an independent guide. We are not a consulate, we cannot act on your behalf, and we hold no files.
