Renouncing Indian citizenship
Renouncing Indian citizenship while still holding it is a deliberate act with its own portal and its own declaration. It is not the same procedure as handing in a passport after the fact, and the two get confused constantly.
Which of the two you are in
| Your situation | Procedure |
|---|---|
| Already naturalised abroad | Surrender certificate. The citizenship is already gone |
| Still an Indian citizen, choosing to renounce | Renunciation, on the citizenship portal |
| Lost the old Indian passport | Renunciation Declaration Certificate |
What happens to the passport
Once the renunciation certificate is issued, the Indian passport is surrendered for cancellation in the same way as in the surrender procedure. The document comes back stamped and you keep it.

What you give up
Everything an Indian passport carries: entry without a visa, the vote, public employment and the right to own agricultural land. An OCI card restores the travel and residence side of it and none of the rest.
- Confirm which of the two procedures applies to you
- Use the government citizenship portal for renunciation
- The passport is surrendered for cancellation either way
- Consider the OCI in the same breath: it is the practical successor
- Keep the certificate; the OCI application asks for it
The date that matters
Indian citizenship ends on the date the foreign citizenship is acquired, not on the date the surrender certificate is issued. Everything between those two dates was done as a foreign national, whatever passport was in the drawer.
That is why using the Indian passport in the gap is treated seriously: it is not a paperwork delay, it is travel on a document that was no longer yours.
Children born before the naturalisation
A child born while both parents were still Indian may be an Indian citizen in their own right, and the parents' renunciation does not touch that. The child's position is assessed separately and often ends in an OCI anyway.
