Renewing an Indian passport in the United States

Renewing an Indian passport in the United States
You cannot renew an Indian passport at the consulate. The application goes to VFS Global, which acts for the Government of India, and the consulate only sees the file afterwards.

This is the most searched consular question in the country, and the answer surprises people: since 2014 the counter that takes your passport application is not a consular counter. VFS Global runs the Indian Consular Application Centres, and every renewal in the United States passes through one.

The consulate still prints nothing and decides everything. VFS checks that the file is complete, takes the fee, and forwards it. If a document is missing, the query comes back through VFS.

What actually happens, in order

You fill in the application on the government's Passport Seva portal, print it, and take or post it to the VFS centre that covers your consulate. Biometric data is captured where required. The file then goes to the consulate, which approves it, and the booklet is printed and returned.

Normal processing is six to eight weeks. There is no way to shorten that except Tatkaal, which is a different application with its own conditions.

The fee is three numbers, not one

There is the government fee, there is the VFS service charge of $19, and there is the fund contribution. Written out: every consular fee carries a separate Indian Community Welfare Fund contribution of two or three dollars, and it has to go in its own money order.

Reviewers describe files coming back for exactly this, a single cheque covering both amounts.

Payment is by money order or cashier's check. Not cash at the counter, not a personal cheque.

If you have taken US citizenship

Then you are not renewing anything. India does not allow dual citizenship, so an Indian passport held after naturalising is no longer valid and using it is an offence. What you need is a surrender certificate and, if you want to keep coming and going, an OCI card.

Before you send anything
  • Fill in the online form first; a blank form buys you a second trip
  • Two separate money orders, one for the fee and one for the fund
  • Check which VFS centre covers your consulate, not which is nearest
  • Allow six to eight weeks, and longer if a query comes back
  • If you have naturalised elsewhere, this is not your procedure
