The OCI card: what it gives you and what it does not

The OCI card: what it gives you and what it does not
Since 8 July 2026 only digital OCI cards are issued to new applicants. The physical booklet is gone.

The Overseas Citizen of India card is what India offers instead of dual citizenship, which its constitution does not allow. It gives lifelong entry and residence to people of Indian origin who hold another passport. It is not citizenship and the difference matters.

What an OCI gives you, and what it does not

You get You do not get
Lifelong multiple-entry entry, no visa ever An Indian passport
No registration with police, however long you stay The vote
Parity with NRIs on most financial matters Public office or government employment
The right to live and work in India Agricultural or plantation land

Who is eligible

Anyone who was an Indian citizen, or whose parent or grandparent was, or who is married to an eligible person. Minor children of an eligible person qualify in their own right.

What an OCI card is and is not
What an OCI card is and is not
Anyone who has ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh is not eligible, and neither are their descendants through that line. There is no discretion in this.

What it costs and how long it takes

A first OCI card is $275, plus the fund contribution and the VFS service charge. Converting an old PIO card is $100. Processing runs around four to five weeks once the file is complete.

The application goes through VFS Global like everything else in this category. The consulate approves; it does not take the file.

The card you already hold

An OCI is not fire and forget. It has to be updated when your foreign passport is renewed, on a schedule that depends on your age, and there is a surcharge for doing it late. That is covered in updating and reissuing an OCI card.

Before you apply
  • New cards are digital only since 8 July 2026
  • $275 for a first card, $100 to convert a PIO card
  • Ever held a Pakistani or Bangladeshi passport: you are not eligible
  • An OCI is not citizenship and carries no vote
  • Allow four to five weeks after the file is complete

OCI and the old PIO card

The Person of Indian Origin card was merged into the OCI scheme and is no longer issued. Holders of an old PIO card convert it for $100, and the consulates have said repeatedly that conversion is not optional in the long run.

A PIO card presented at immigration today is treated as valid in some cases and questioned in others. The conversion removes the question.

What a digital OCI looks like in practice

Since 8 July 2026 the card is a digital record rather than a booklet. You carry a printout and the passport it is matched against, and immigration reads it from the system. Nothing to lose, and nothing to renew when a booklet fills up.
