India runs 9 consular offices in the United States: the embassy in Washington and eight consulates general. Two of them are recent, and their arrival is still working its way through the official pages: Boston took five New England states from New York, and Seattle took the northern plains from Chicago. There are no honorary consuls.
The single most useful thing to know before setting off is that the consulate is often not the building you need. Passports, visas, OCI cards and surrender certificates go through VFS Global, which runs the application centres. Chicago and Atlanta publish the VFS address on their own front pages without saying that is what it is, and in Seattle the two share a building and differ by suite number.
The busiest question in the whole subject is how to renew an Indian passport, at 22,200 searches a month, and the consulate does not take that application. The next two are asked by Americans travelling to India: the answer is that a US passport does need a visa, and that for almost every trip the e-Visa covers it online.
Five states are claimed by two consulates at once. Wyoming appears in both the San Francisco and the Seattle districts; North Dakota and South Dakota moved to Seattle and Chicago still lists them; and the five New England states that went to Boston are still advertised on the New York consulate's own homepage. California is the only state split by county, and Bakersfield falls on the Los Angeles side of it.
India does not allow dual citizenship. Taking another nationality ends the Indian one on the spot, which is why the surrender certificate and the OCI card between them account for most of the paperwork this network handles. Since 8 July 2026 new OCI cards are digital only. Our pages on how each office takes appointments and on fees and requirements put the nine side by side.
Where the Indian offices are
Here are all the Indian consulates in the United States
The embassy and the fourteen consulates general issue passports, visas, certificates and family register entries. A consular office is a smaller category with a narrower range, and an honorary consulate issues nothing at all.
And the embassy
The embassy in Washington is a mission to the United States, not a consulate for the country. Its own district is seven units wide and stops at Maryland in the north and Virginia in the south.
Its chancery and its consular section are in different buildings, and the application centre that acts for it is a third address again.
Other cities
There is no Indian consulate in most American cities. These have a page of their own: which office covers them, how far away it is, and what can be settled without going.
